How to Not Feel Too Intimidated to Go to the Gym

The gym can be a daunting experience, for those who are regular gym goers and for those who are entering a gym for the first time. Gym anxiety is a common occurrence and often contributes to individuals not being able to achieve their health and fitness goals. Many fear they are being judged and made fun of because of their performance or the way they look. Being too intimidated to go to the gym is a normal feeling for so many people, but we are here to tell you that there is absolutely no reason to feel this way. With that in mind, we have some great tips to help you feel less intimidated so you go to the gym.

Sign up for Personal Training Sessions

If you are too intimidated to go to the gym and have no experience using weight or cardio machines, it is a great idea to try a few sessions with a personal trainer. A personal trainer will show you what weights and machines are best for you to achieve your results. They will also guide you around proper exercise technique for a more effective workout. Our personal trainers at Planet Fitness are experienced and caring professionals who can work alongside you to achieve your goals in a safe and secure environment. They can also develop a fitness plan to help build your confidence. The best time to ask questions about any exercises or machines is when you are with your personal trainer. They are there to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you want.

Try a Fitness Class

Another way to get started at the gym is by trying a variety of fitness classes. A group exercise environment is a great way to not only get fit but an opportunity to feel comfortable in a group atmosphere. Our gyms in Lambton, Charlestown and Belmont offer several group classes including HIIT, Spinn and Les Mills Body Pump. Try arriving early before your first class so you can introduce yourself to the instructor. Use this time to explain that you are new and let them know about any limitations or concerns. While standing at the front of the class may not seem like the best thing to do if you generally feel intimidated when at the gym, definitely avoid placing yourself at the back. Instead, find a spot towards the front where you are still able to follow the instructor.

Avoid Peak Times

Before work, during lunch and after work are usually the busiest times at any gym. If you wish to avoid the rush, we suggest scheduling your gym sessions around these times. This gives you the opportunity to explore the gym and equipment in a more relaxed manner. However, we must say that there are benefits to training during peak times. Not only is it a great way to observe how different gym goers use certain machines, but it can also build your confidence in exercising around other people. Ultimately, it is up to you when you choose to exercise at a time that is comfortable for you, so that you continue to do so.

Listen to Music

Listening to your favourite playlist or artist at the gym is a great way to stay motivated and in the zone. It can also ease any gym anxiety and help prevent you from feeling too intimidated to go to the gym. If you want to feel less distracted by surrounding gym goers and less self-conscious about your own abilities, then we recommend working out to music.
